Statutory Sick Pay

£94.25 Per Week
Paid by employer for up to 28 weeks.
Includes if caring or advised to do a household quarantine
From Day 1
Can get isolation note from NHS 111 online – replacing sick note. (Accepted at jobcentre)

Self-Employed workers

Make a claim for universal credit

New style Employment and support allowance

Regular fortnight payment
unlikely to receive if have not paid NI (must have worked last 2 to 3 years)
Can also claim UC if have combined savings of less than £16,000
Cannot claim alongside severe disability premium
May claim other benefits
Require filing in NSESAF1 claim form

Furloughed Workers

Designate employees as ‘furloughed workers’ – Notify employees of this change (this remains subject to existing employment law
Submit information to HMRC that have been furloughed and their earnings. (online Portal)
HMRC will pay 80% up to £2,500
To qualify for this scheme, you should not undertake work for them while you are furloughed.
You will remain employed while furloughed, employer can choose to pay difference between payment and salary
If there is a difference may be eliable for support including UC


Deferral will apply from 20 March 2020 until 30 June 2020
All businesses are eligible
Automatic no need to apply
Will have until 2021 tax year to pay any liabilities

Income Tax

Payments due on 31 July 2020 deferred until 31 January 2021
All self-employed eligible
No interest or penalties will be charged in period

Time to pay service

All businesses and self-employed people in financial distress with liabilities may be eligible for support

Businesses that have cover for both pandemics and government ordered closures should be covered
Check terms and conditions with suppliers
Most businesses are unlikely to be covered as standard policies exclude pandemics

Support for businesses who are paying sick pay

Will refund 2 weeks SSP per eligible employee
Employers with fewer than 250 employees will be eligible (as of 28 February 2020)
Employers will be able to reclaim expenditure for an employee
Employers should maintain records of staff absences and payments of SSP – Require only isolation note
Government working on setting up repayment mechanism
